May 5, 2009 | On my last day in the city, Monica and I met up a friend of mine, Albert.  I think he worked nearby or something?

We met up at Safran at 88 Seventh Ave, for some fancy Vietnamese food.  I say fancy because it was a little more upscale than the typical pho restaurant.  Still, I ordered a pho boox tail beef soup with rice noodle and sliced of beef served with beansprout, basil and hoisin dipping source.

Food was average overall but it was good for the price and location (if you work in the Union Square area).  More than a pho back in Houston, but that’s no surprise (lots of good, cheap Asian food in Houston!)

I did, however, like the meat in my pho (especially the pieces that were initially put in the soup raw).  The decor was really nice too.

Curry in a Hurry

July 22, 2009

May 4, 2009 | Even after eating ALL that food that day, we STILL met up with my sister for dinner at Curry in a Hurry (yelp).  Probably not the best Indian place in town, but it was good and it was a lot of food at an affordable price!  Monica and I ordered 1 combo for the both of us.

I think it’s palak paneer (spinach) and some sort of lamb dish.  Those came with naan, rice, and an assortment of sauces.

I don’t know the name of any of the sauces but it was fun trying them, haha.  Anyway, it was all for $8.50!  My pictures aren’t so great, but, well, it’s hard making Indian food look pretty…I like the oriental-looking plate for the sauces, haha.

Sugar Sweet Sunshine

July 22, 2009

May 4, 2009 | Before dinner, we went to Sugar Sweet Sunshine (yelp) for cupcakes!  Monica insisted we stop there so I, of course, obliged.  I’m sure glad we made that stop.  We got a sexy red velvet – red velvet cake with “the moose”, and a spicy pumpkin – spicy pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing.

The cupcakes were so light and fluffy!  The icing wasn’t overly sweet the way it usually is.  Seriously, I would probably eat cupcakes a lot more if they all tasted like this.  *drool*

Oh yeah, and it’s a cute little store.  Looks like a chill, casual place to sit and chat with a friend while nibbling on a scrumptious cupcake!  =)

Dumpling House

July 22, 2009

May 4, 2009 | Knowing my love for dumplings, Monica brought me to Dumpling House (yelp) on 118 Eldrige Street, 10002.   We ordered 8 chive dumplings for a measly $2.50!!

The dumplings were great!  I can’t say they were the best I ever had but they were up there..and for $2.50? Hell, yea! At the back, there was a window into a kitchen where a couple of Chinese women were preparing the dumplings.

Reminds me of when I was little and I used to help my mom make dumplings!  I’m still amazed by how cheap the food was here!!  The place is small and was crowded, so we had to wait a bit to get a table, which we then had to share with a mom and her kid.

May 4, 2009 |  We stopped by Il Laboratorio del Gelato for some gelato (duh!).   Mmm!  We shared a small gelato with 2 scoops — green apple and strawberry.

It was yummy and a nice small, sweet snack. =) I haven’t had bad gelato yet though.  In any case, it was a great light snack between our mini-meals!

Schiller’s Liquor Bar

July 21, 2009

May 4, 2009 | Monica wanted to visit Schiller’s Liquor Bar and I’m sure glad we went!  It was just a good chance for us to take a break from allt he walking around and eating.  I ordered a Moscow Mule ($11) – Stolichnaya vodka, ginger beer, fresh lime juice, and she got the Sparkling Mango ($11) – vodka, fresh lemon juice, and mango liqueur shaken and topped off with champagne.

The Moscow Mule is my new favorite drink!  It’s sweet, but it’s ginger sweet, so ya know…not the same.  But really, what made the place great, was the decor and feel of the place.  It had an sorta old-diner-y feel, sorta?  It didn’t feel too pretentious and yet it didn’t feel like a sports bar.

I do wonder what the place is like in the evening (it was early afternoon when we went).

Roni Sue’s Chocolates

July 21, 2009

May 4, 2009 | I’m continuing where I left off on livejournal. I heard about the bacon chocolate at Roni Sue’s so we stopped by and I bought a box of assorted chocolates that I picked out (12 for $18).

Mmm, the chocolates were really yummy although I can’t ignore the fact that I’m lactose-intolerant.  Soo, just small nibbles, haha.  The bacon chocolate was actually some bacon dipped chocolate and bacon buttercrunch (didn’t get a good picture).  I bought some bacocn buttercrunch to take home!
