January 12, 2011 | Although it’s fairly early in the season, I couldn’t resist making a trip to Jolynn’s Crawfish for their spicy garlic butter crawfish!! As most of my friends know, I’m a HUGE fan of crawfish! Jolynn’s is located between a small dollar store and liquor store in a sketchy-looking strip mall at the northeast corner of Beechnut and Wilcrest. It’s BYOB, so if you’re craving some beer (or liquor), it’s an easy walk next door to pick some up!
The crawfish prices shifts seasonally, and on this trip, they were running $6.99/lb. Not the cheapest in town, that’s for sure.
If you’ve never been to Jolynn’s, know that the place primarily serves just crawfish. The menu is very simple and the only other menu items I recall are sausage and crab. Jolynn’s offers a few different levels of spiciness for those of you who can’t handle spice! I’ve found that the crawfish isn’t as spicy as in previous years so I’ve moved from ‘spicy’ to ‘extra spicy’.
Jolynn’s also offers to options of flavor: garlic butter and lemon pepper. As an avid fan of garlic, I’ve always gone with the garlic butter although the lemon pepper is tasty as well. There’s seriously a TON of garlic in there though, so be prepared!
One of the things I love about this place is that they provide you with a long plastic apron to wear to protect your clothes! You never know when someone might squirt crawfish juices on you (or you might do that to yourself).
Since eating at Jolynn’s, I’ve also gotten accustomed to mixing a dipping sauce comprised of a cajun seasoning powder, salt and pepper, and lemon juice. There’s also the option of using butter, barbeque sauce, and mayo. Apparently, it’s an Asian thing.
Although service was exceptionally slow that day, the crawfish really hit the spot! Or maybe it’s that addictive sauce? Either way, I left happy and felt that this crawfish season was off to a great start!
